Hello from Cherise
Hello all,
My name is Cherise. I’m a 24 year old bipolar NOS and Type 1 Diabetic. I’m writing to talk about life with both bipolar disorder and being Type 1 diabetic. Along the way there have been some severe complications that have happened including being diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy. This happened in July 2008. I have been in the hospital once for the bipolar disorder in June 2008 and four times with a complications of the diabetes called diabetic ketoacidosis, in June 2001, April 2007, July 2007, and July 2008. During the stay in July 2008, numbness and tingling started happening once I was moved from the ER to ICU. I told the nurses and doctors about this but none of them did anything about it. After getting out of the hospital it got progressively worse. I got a case of drop foot in my right foot. I went to see my primary care physician and he scheduled me for an MRI which showed no nerves pinched that they might have thought that it was that, but the test proved that I had diabetic neuropathy. The most likely cause is the medications that I was put on for my bipolar disorder that severely messed with my blood glucose levels. I am now not able to take any types of medication that affect my blood glucose levels because of this. This includes anti-manic medicines like Seroquel, Zyprexa, etc. This is making it very hard to treat my bipolar. I am still taking Tegretol which isn’t working at all so we are weaning me off that to start at baseline with no medications and go from there. This is causing things to go completely crazy.
On top of all of this my husband lost his job today (12/15/08). I am not sure what we are going to do. We are afraid to talk to his family and mine left for Nevada today and didn’t seem to care that this was happening. All they said that they were expecting that it was going to happen. Well he had legitmate reasons why he was missing work with medical notes. They were all considered unexcused absensces even when he was in the hospital for a week. So we are dealing with that now too. We have to go back to DWS to reapply for his unemployment claim because for some reason it is not working online.
All of this going on plus I am trying to deal with things with school. Tomorrow I have a field trip that I’m not sure that I really want to go on. Its going to be completely boring and I’d rather stay in the class room and work on my calendar and t-shirt designs.
Well that’s what’s going on right now. Things are going to collide and hopefully they don’t collide so bad that I finally crash. But at times it seems like that is going to happen.
Blessings
Cherise
